Doorian Samne Se Jo Hutney Lagain
Jaalion Se Nigahain Lipatnay Lagain
Ansoo’on Ki Zubaan, Ho Meri Tarjumaan
Dil Se Nikle Sada, Tu Kujja Mann Kujja

When the distances between you [Muhammad SAW] and my eyes end
My glances embraces the golden mesh of your tomb
Only languages of tears can describe my emotions now
Where my humble being, and where Yours exalted station.

Pathro Aaj Meray Sar Pe Barastay Kyon Ho
Main Ne Tum Ko Bhi Kabhi Apna Khuda Rakha Hai?

Jab Se Tune Mujhe Deewana Bana Rakha Hai
Sung Har Shakhs Ne Hathon Mein Utha Rakha Hai

O Stones! Why are you drizzling on my head today?
Did I ever ever treated you as my God?

Since you have made me mad in your love
Every person has picked a stone to throw at me.

These verses from Hakeem Nasir’s Ghazal were immortalized by Abida Parveen voice. Download Jab Se Tune Mujhe Deewana here.

King and the Sufi Painting

King and the Sufi Painting

A king once saw a man, who, though clad in rags was working in the way of self-perfection.

He called him and asked: ‘Who is the better off, you or I?’
The man said: “O ignorant one, beat your breast and hold your tongue. Who praises himself does not understand the meaning of words; but this I must say, there can be no doubt that a man such as I am is thousand times better off than a man such as you. With not even the taste of religion, your dog of desire has reduced you to the status of an ass. He is your master and rides you on a bridle pulling your head this way and that. You do all that he commands. You are a non-entity, and fit for nothing, whereas I who know the secrets of the heart have made of this dog, my ass to ride upon. Your dog rules you, but if you will make of it an ass you are then as I, and a hundred times better off than your fellows.”.

Shabli once disappeared from Baghdad, no one knew where. At last he was discovered in a house of eunuchs, sitting with humid eye and dry lips among these grotesque creatures.

His friends said: “This is no place for you who are a student of divine mysteries”.

Shabli replied: ‘These persons, in the way of religion, are neither men nor women. I am as they. I sink in inertia, and my virility is a reproach. If you use praise and blame to make distinctions you are creating idols. When you conceal a hundred idols under your khirka, why appear before men as a Sufi?’

The influence of Sufi Music is so vast that many Westerner don’t know anything about Islam yet listen to ‘Allah Hoo’ song as I witnessed myself at Sufi concerts held in London many years ago.

Similarly, in Japan, the only thing they knew about Pakistan was Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who mesmerized audiences with their voices. Nusrat Sahib was also revered for his resemblance to Baidu or laughing Buddha.

Arif and Irfan: Letter by Wazir Dayers

An ‘ārif is someone who possesses ‘irfān, i.e. knowledge or wisdom that is not obtained through the ordinary senses, but in a mystical way. Such a person might therefore be an enlightened one.

An ‘ārif can also be called a “gnostic”, i.e. someone who possesses esoteric knowledge and has insight in spiritual matters. An ‘ārif is “a Knower of Truth”.

‘Irfān is mystical knowledge or wisdom. It is derived from the Arabic verbal root ‘-r-f (ﻋﺮﻑ); ‘ārif is derived from the same root. This verbal root has everything to do with “knowing” and “knowledge”. In this respect also consider the term ‘ārifāna kalām, i.e. poetry and music that is composed by ‘ārif-s, people with mystical knowledge and insight.

Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil 'alamin

Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil ‘alamin

Allah has countless names and attributes [Asmaul Hasana]. In Quran He uses these so His being can be understood by people, whether it is Al-Baaqi  [The Forever Enduring] or Al-Khaliq [The Creator] or Malik ul Mulk [The Owner of Entire Creation].

In Quran, Allah began the first Ayah of Surah Fatiha with Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil ‘alamin [All praises be to Allah who is the Lord/Creator of all Worlds]. Considering it is part of every Namaz, it is the most repeated Ayah by Muslims. Among infinite, Allah chose Rabbil ‘alamin, the Lord and Benefactor of all worlds. It shows his merciful nature as well as utmost authority in all worlds, seen or unseen.

As Allah calls himself Rabul-Alameen, he also called beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW, Rehmat Lil Alameen, as seen in verses below:

Wa Ma Arsalnaka illa Rahmatalil Aalameen

Wa Ma Arsalnaka illa Rahmatalil Aalameen

Wa Ma Arsalnaka illa Rahmatalil Aalameen

And We have not sent you [Prophet Muhammad] but as a Mercy to all Worlds.

– Surat Al-Anbiyaa (Surah of the Prophets): Ayah 108

Like the authority of Allah escapes nothing, big or small, similarly nothing escapes the Rehmet and mercy of Prophet Muhammad SAW. Download the most beautiful 40 Naat Sharifs at TheSufi.com.

Story of Hazrat Ali Hujwiri Data Ganj Bakhsh arriving in Lahore

When Hazrat Ali Hajvairi R.A. (Daata Sahib of Lahore) arrived in Lahore upon advice of his mentor, the city was already flourishing with many revered Sufi saints.

To test Ali Hajvairi, they sent him a cup of milk that was full of milk to the edge. It was a polite hint that there may not be more room for another saint in Lahore!

Ali Hajvairi smiled at their gesture and responded by adding a spoon of sugar in the same cup of milk. Sugar dissolved in milk molecules, sweetening it without raising the level of milk, so it didn’t over flow from edges. When those saints received and drank the sweetened milk, they knew the true patron saint of Lahore has arrived. Daata Sahib’s wisdom was acknowledged by the founding father and greatest Muslim schokar, Dr. Allama Iqbal, read his poem from Israr-e-Khudi here.

Today Lahore is sweetened by holy presence of revered saint. Any time day or night, there is langar waiting for poor , needy, beggars, travellers and pilgrims without any question about caste, religions or sect.

Nusrat Sahib used to head back to Lahore to perform at the Urs of Daata Sahib no matter whereever in the world he was for concerts.

Blessed grave of Mevlana Rumi

Blessed grave of Mevlana Rumi

Sufi Whirling Ensemble or Samaa, often referred as Sufi Dancing is a spiritual ritual attributed to Mevlana Rumi, a form of meditation he performed connect to God and discover Self.

Today it is performed by Mevlevi order dervaishes in ensemble especially in Turkey. Details of the 7 phases of whirling ceremony can be found here.

The derveshes both rotate around themselves s as well as around the spiritual mentor, who remain stationary. It is similar to movement of planets around the sun, which is both rotation on axis as well as revolution around the sun.

The dervishes (also semazens) raise right hand to connect with heavens , while the left hand pointing downwards symbolises distribution of the knowledge to creation, hence the derveshes becomes a vehicle from which guidance is passed through.

The purpose of whirling, like all rituals, is to control ego, and reach station where link between creator and creation is established.

The whirling Sufi (Semazen) wear a long woollen hat (Sikke), usually made of camel skin. Following Hamd and Darood, the whirling ceremony begins as dervaishes begin to whirl around. The right hand is raised to sky for receive God’s benfecience and blessings and left hand is directed towards earth and it’s dwellers as such is distributed. Sufi becomes a medium from which the communication takes place and it leads to state of ecstacy as whirling continues.

Khudi Ka Sirr e Nihaan, La Ilahaa Illa Allah [خودی کا سرِ نہاں لا الہٰ الا اللہ] is Allama Iqbal’s most loved poem from his compilation, Zarb-e-Kaleem (ضر ب کلیم). The complete Urdu text of this simple and thought-provoking poem is below.

Sanam Marvi performed this kalam at the Virsa – Heritage Revived, a Pakistan Television [PTV] produced by Mian Yousuf Salahuddin , the grandson of Allama Iqbal. Along with Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Sanam Marvi performed these evergreen verses of Dr. Muhammad Iqbal in form of duet. Lyrics

Khudi Ka Sirr e Nihan, La Ilahaa Illa Allah

Remembering Allama Iqbal at Mezquita de Córdoba [Cordoba Mosque]

I had immense honour to visit Mezquita de Córdoba [Cordoba Mosque], whose grandeur left Dr. Allama Iqbal to tears and he penned beautiful verses that glorify the muslim rule in Andulasia.

In the almanac of Ishq, besides our current age
Exist many eras, which remain nameless.
Ishq is archangel Gabriel’s breath; Ishq is Prophet Muhammad [Mustafa]’s spirit
Ishq is the message of God; Ishq is the messenger of God.
The Hand of God is the Hand of the Momin,
Triumphant and Capable, Ingenious and Skillful.

Alcázar of Seville, Spain

The Alcazar of Seville, with a history stretching back more than a thousand years, is one of the most complex and important buildings in the world; the diversity and uniqueness of its almost-labyrinthine rooms are of extraordinary value. With every step, we are taken to key moments in Spanish history: the arrival of the Taifa kings, the Almohad Caliphate, the Castilian transformation, etc. The steps of such singular characters such as Al-Mutamid, Ferdinand III “The Saint”, Peter I “The Just”, Isabella of Castille, or Emperor Charles can still be heard echoing through its spaces.

The history of the Islamic palace is that of the city itself: a dynamic city that grew in size along with its political influence and architectural wealth. Currently, a large portion of its walls and palaces are still standing, albeit disguised or altered by the different powers that have inhabited its rooms since the Castilian conquest. The walls that surround the Patio de Banderas, its original door, the Palacio del Yeso and a large part of the Patio del Crueero belong to the Islamic period.

Starting in the 13th century, the Castilians adapted to the royal life of-the palac^- Transforming thj| meaning and purposes of the different spaces. Firstly, they chose to superimpose, upon what had been the most Important of the Almohad palaces, a building emblematic for its quality and symbolism. The Palacio Gotico represented the drastic transition of the new Christian order, but the rest of the buildings belonging to the Islamic citadel continued to be inhabited with few alterations to their structure for a century after the conquest.

Archaeological excavations have revealed both processes, nevertheless showing the spectacular change set into motion by King Peter I starting in 1356, which meant the definitive disappearance of the Almohad interior layout of the central area of the complex. It is the Palacio Mudgjar that serves as the heart of the current palace, its most precious jewel, a faithful witness to ah age of splendour, with a mix of cultures and personality like few others in our history.

But the Alcazar cannot be understood without its gardens whose diversity and harmony give testimony to the splendour of Seville beginning in the Renaissance. Facing the grand Palacio Gotico and Palacio Mudejar, the Italian Renaissance gardens of Las Damas, La Danza, Troya, Galera and Flores extend southwards in an ordered fashion, under the protection of the Ahnohad wall. Flanking them to the east and west, respectively, are the gardens of Jardin del Marques

Sukh Mahee Naal Laa Gayan

Sukh Mahee Naal Laa Gaya

Mainu Sochan Diyaan De Gayan Soghatan is a beautiful love song by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali, which featured on blockbuster Punjabi Movie Choorian.  Punjabi folk music influenced Lollywood massively, which is manifested by this song which portrays deeps emotions of longing and separation.

Such poetry is heavily influenced by likes of Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain, examples of Bulleh Shah verses below:

دکھ درد سی میرے مقدراں وچ
میں شکوہ کر کے کی کردا؟

جدوں مینوں جینا نہیں آیا
میں موت وی منگ کے کی کردا؟

When despair was written in my fortune

Who could I blame for my miseries?

When I never lived a ‘life’ in reality

How could I ask for death to end it

Allama Iqbal’s poem in respect of Hazrat Baba Guru Nanik

Guru Nnik and Allama Iqbal

Allama Iqbal had immense respect for Hazrat Baba Guru Nanik, the founder of Sikhism. Guru Nanik’s fundamental teaching was oneness of God [Tawheed]. Iqbal also shared his reverence for Buddha in his diary, Stray Reflections.

Below poem is Allama’s beautiful tribute with English Translation to Baba Guru Nanik:

Allama Iqbal and Baba Guru Nanik

Allama Iqbal and Baba Guru Nanik

The nation didn’t bother about Buddha’s message

They failed to realize the price of their unprecedented pearl.

Pity them; they remain ignorant of voice of Truth

They don’t know the sweetness of their own tree.

Buddha revealed the ultimate truth of life

However, Hind was proud of its illusionary fancies

It was not gathering which benefits of light of truth

The rain of spiritual blessings happened, but the land was not ready for it.

Alas! For the low-caste, Hindustan had became a land of despairs

It had become blind to the sorrows of humanity

The Brahmin were still intoxicated with wine of pride

The light of Buddha is shining in the halls of foreigners [The West]

After many ages, the house of idols became lightened

Within Azar house, the light of Hazrat Ibrahim begins to shine

Lo! Again rises the voice of Tawheed [Monotheism] from lands of Punjab

A perfect man wakes up Hind from their dreams of ignorance.
